When the squad got to halftime after being out played by Die Schwaben, head coach Vincent Kompany said his team knew it was ready to break out and take the game over.
Boy, were those Bayern Munich players correct.
“It’s wonderful. We played against a strong opponent today, and the first half was very even. This team always manages to raise the level of play. We defended solidly – it was an almost perfect cup final. All the players said at halftime: We’re on the verge of it, it can still turn around. There were one-on-one situations where we didn’t make the right decision. But we felt we could still raise the level. It was a close final, and in the second half, we did the things we needed to do to win. We sometimes made really good runs into space, and then you have a good mix of activity on the ball and active runs – that’s difficult to defend,” said Kompany (as captured by FCBayern.com).
Bayern Munich used that second half surge to pull away as Harry Kane poured in a hat-trick. Even after a slow start, the Bavarians had a fast — and dominant — finish.
