The team hosted a regional for the 21st consecutive season and absolutely dominated. There was some concern that the Vols got a tough draw, and Virginia and Indiana were both very good teams this season. However, the Vols dominated from start to finish, taking down Northern Kentucky in Game 1 and then beating Virginia in two straight to clinch a Super Regional appearance.

The dominance didn’t end in the next round, either. The Vols, led by a dominant pitching performance from Karlyn Pickens, beat the Georgia Bulldogs 3-1 in the first game. Erin Nuwer and Sage Mardjetko combined for another dominant pitching performance in the second game, this time with the Vols winning 2-1.

As a result, the Vols became the first team to punch their ticket to the College World Series in Oklahoma City. This is the second straight CWS appearance for the Vols and the team’s third in the last four years.

The Vols get a nice little break now, as their first game in OKC won’t be until Thursday. They will play either Texas or Arizona State in the first round.

Now, it will be interesting to see how far the Vols can ride this hot streak. Karen Weekly’s squad was the CWS runner-up in 2013, but they haven’t made it that far since then. It certainly seems like this pitching staff is geared up to make a run, but the question will be whether or not the team can get enough offense.
