South Africa’s millionaires are moving – But they’re not leaving the country

South Africa’s wealth landscape is shifting in a way that reflects a deeper change in how the country’s richest households now live, work, and think about money.

According to a new report by Standard Bank Wealth and Investment, the Western Cape has now overtaken Gauteng in the number of high-net-worth individuals, with about 17 300 compared to Gauteng’s 14 000.
On paper, that places Cape Town firmly ahead as the country’s leading wealth hub.
South Africa’s millionaires existing in two places at once
But the reality is more layered than a simple ranking.
Gauteng, and especially Johannesburg, remains the centre of economic activity in South Africa.
It’s where wealth is created through corporate headquarters, financial services, industry, and large-scale business networks. The money still starts here.
Cape Town, however, is increasingly where that money ends up being spent.
This divide has created a growing dual-city lifestyle among affluent South Africans. Many professionals continue to earn their income in Gauteng, but choose to base their families, homes, or extended time in the Western Cape.
The reasons are familiar: lifestyle appeal, natural surroundings, perceived safety advantages, and a stronger alignment with international living standards.
Property trends reinforce this shift. High-end suburbs such as Clifton, Constantia, and Bishopscourt continue to attract both local and international buyers, with homes increasingly viewed not just as residences, but as long-term lifestyle assets.
Yet Gauteng’s role should not be underestimated.
It remains the core of South Africa’s economic productivity, hosting the majority of corporate headquarters, financial institutions, and high-value business transactions.
In essence, the country’s wealth map is not shrinking; it’s just splitting.
Cape Town may have overtaken Gauteng in millionaire numbers, but Johannesburg still defines the money that makes that lifestyle possible.
