The week of Feb. 15-21 saw the 2026 IHSAA boys state wrestling championships take place in Des Moines.

The Ames area had 10 wrestlers compete at the boys state wrestling tournament. Ames wrestlers Jaimon Mogard and Braxton Winkey both placed third at 144 and 150, respectively, in Class 3A.

Ballard's Easton Enyeart placed second at 132 pounds and Caiden Latch finished seventh at 138 in Class 2A.

It was also a busy week of boys high school basketball. Roland-Story downed Osage, 63-46, in the district semifinals on Feb. 20, 4A No. 6 Ames picked up a 52-45 win at Ankeny Centennial on Feb. 17 and Gilbert completed its regular season on Feb. 16 with a 77-69 win at Decorah.

Nevada also wrapped up its regular season with a 57-41 victory at Boone.

There were several standout individual performances from male high school athletes from the Ames area during the week.

Easton Enyeart, Ballard

Enyeart was a state wrestling runner-up for the second year in a row after falling to Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont's Gage Spurgeon by tiebreaker-1, 5-1, in the 132-pound finals of 2A.

He went 4-1 during the state tournament to finish with a 35-5 record on the season. He defeated Williamsburg's Hayden Albaugh by technical fall (15-0) and added wins by decision over Decorah's Mason Avila (10-3) and Crestwood's Carter Schmauss (5-1) to reach the finals for the second year in a row.

Braxton Winkey, Ames

Winkey went 5-1 at the IHSAA state wrestling tournament to place third at 150 in 3A.

He won four matches by decision and one by fall at state to finish the season at 43-4. He avenged his only loss of the tournament with a 5-0 win over Waverly-Shell Rock's Easton Jorgenson in the third-place match.

Jaimon Mogard, Ames

Mogard capped an outstanding 44-4 freshman season at 144 for the Ames wrestling team with a third-place finish in 3A.

He was 4-1 with a pin, two technical falls and a win by major decision. His only loss was a 4-2 setback to Southeast Polk's Wil Oberbroeckling in the semifinals.

Caiden Latch, Roland-Story

Latch went 4-2 to place seventh at 138 in 2A during the IHSAA state wrestling championships.

He had one win by fall, one by technical fall and two by decision to earn a spot on the podium at state for the first time. He finished the season at 43-6.

George Nelson, Nevada

Nelson went off for a career-high 30 points during the Nevada basketball team's 57-41 victory over Boone to end the regular season on Feb. 16.

He made 13 of 20 field goals, including 3 of 8 3-pointers, and he made his only attempt from the line in scoring more than half of Nevada's points. Nelson also dished out four assists and tallied two steals.
