Iran officials accuse Trump of telling 'big lies' about its nuclear program

· Toronto Sun

Officials in Iran say their country won’t be pushed around by U.S. President Donald Trump ahead of talks in Geneva over its nuclear program.

During the State of the Union address Tuesday night in Washington, D.C., Trump said he would prefer to engage in diplomacy with Tehran to solve the differences between both countries.

“We are in negotiations with them,” Trump said. “They want to make a deal, but we haven’t heard those secret words: ‘We will never have a nuclear weapon.'”

He also spoke about Iran’s efforts to rebuild its weapons program, which was heavily damaged after the U.S. launched missile strikes at nuclear sites last year.

Weapons program a threat

“They’ve already developed missiles that can threaten Europe and our bases overseas, and they’re working to build missiles that will soon reach the United States of America,” Trump said. “They were warned to make no future attempts to rebuild their weapons program, and in particular nuclear weapons, yet they continue. They’re starting it all over.”

Trump also pointed out at least 32,000 people have been killed in last month’s government protests in Iran.

In recent days, the U.S. military has begun moving warships to the Middle East as the U.S. president has threatened to strike the country yet again if talks go nowhere.

Iran officials push back

However, a spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry said Trump’s speech was full of “big lies” about the Iranian government.

“Professional liars are good at creating the ‘illusion of truth’,” Esmaeil Baqaei said in a post Wednesday on X .

Iran’s parliament speaker said the U.S. could either try diplomacy or face Iran’s wrath, the Associated Press reports .

“If you choose the table of diplomacy — a diplomacy in which the dignity of the Iranian nation and mutual interests are respected — we will also be at that table,” Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf said, according to the semiofficial Student News Network, a media outlet believed to be close to Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard.

“But if you decide to repeat past experiences through deception, lies, flawed analysis and false information, and launch an attack in the midst of negotiations, you will undoubtedly taste the firm blow of the Iranian nation and the country’s defensive forces.”

Vance backs Trump’s stance

U.S. Vice President JD Vance backed Trump’s stance on Iran that the country cannot have a nuclear weapon.

“That would be the ultimate military objective if that’s the route that he chose,” Vance told Fox News on Wednesday.

“Most Americans understand that you can’t let the craziest and the worst regime in the world have nuclear weapons.”

Iran and the U.S. are set to meet Thursday in Geneva for a third round of talks with officials from Oman mediating the discussions.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his team arrived on a flight late Wednesday , where they are expected to meet with American officials led by special U.S. Mideast envoy Steve Witkoff.
