Tony Bennett finds a new position in the NBA.
The former Virginia coach will be joining the Los Angeles Lakers as NBA Draft advisor to President of Basketball Operations and General Manager Rob Pelinka, per an announcement. One of the most underrated additions with months to go before the draft.
“We’re thrilled and honored to welcome Tony as an advisor to the Lakers basketball operations department,” Pelinka said in a statement.
"As we refine and build out our NBA draft and scouting processes, we could think of no better basketball mind than Bennett to have as a resource. Tony’s track record of forming culture, with high-character, high-skill and high-IQ players is revered and respected across all basketball circles. Tony will be an incredible asset to our basketball leadership, to our scouts and to our draft department as a whole. We are truly excited."
Bennett goes to Tinseltown with a stacked resume. The three-time national coach of the year recipient is well-known for his time as the head coach of Virginia from 2009-24. He compiled a 364-136 regular-season record, including a 189-82 mark in ACC play. Bennett became just the fourth former NBA player to win the NCAA title as a head coach.

“When Rob and I began talking, what stood out to me was the chance to help out such a storied organization,” Bennett said. "The Lakers carry a tradition that speaks for itself, so to be connected to it and assist Rob and the Lakers in any way I can is exciting.”
Before his coaching career, Bennett played four NBA seasons, including a stint with the Charlotte Hornets from 1992-95. But this will be his first year attached to an NBA front office.
