The teen admitted he was among a group of four people wearing masks who entered the Georgian Mall on the afternoon of Aug. 18, 2025, and ran to Dia Amore Jewellers where they began smashing glass cases with hammers, CTV News reports .

The thieves grabbed whatever they could before quickly leaving the scene in a stolen vehicle.

Following the robbery, a handgun and ammunition clip was found on the floor of the store along with a small sledgehammer, Barrie Today reported at the time .

Second robbery at store

It was the second robbery the store’s owner had endured in a year after thieves targeted the shop in August 2024.

Four robbery suspects, along with the suspected driver, were arrested by police hours later following a chase on Hwy. 400 when the getaway car crashed in a construction zone in Innisfil.

The teen was the first of the five accused to be convicted after he pleaded guilty months later and was sentenced to time served this week.

Teen awaits separate case

However, the teen — who turns 18 in May — reportedly still faces weapons charges in Toronto in a separate case and has yet to be released from custody.

Before he was sentenced, a judge read a statement from the jewelry store owner who says they now “live and work in fear” every day.

“What was taken from us was more than merchandise,” the statement said. “Our sense of safety, peace, and security has been shattered. The emotional damage will stay with us longer than any financial loss.”

The teen will be placed on probation for two years and will also be required to abide by a curfew. He is banned from entering Georgian Mall as well.

Two youths were bailed out at the time of their arrests while two others, Ahmed Al-Saeed, 22, and Jahzyi Smith, 19, remain behind bars.

Police said one of the youths was found in possession of a fully loaded semi-automatic firearm when he was arrested.

Of the five, Al-Saeed is the only accused from Barrie. The rest are from Toronto and Mississauga.

After being taken into custody, they were each charged with robbery with violence, disguise with intent, flight from a peace officer, dangerous operation of a vehicle, possession of stolen property over $5,000, and possession of stolen property under $5,000

The remaining four suspects return to court in March, according to CTV News .

The identities of the youths are protected by the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
