Many Washington Commanders fans residing in the DMV will recall Vernon Davis as a Maryland Terrapins tight end. In his second and third years for the Terps, Davis grew leaps and bounds, catching 27 and then 51 passes, averaging 16.3 and 17.1 yards per reception. But it was for Maryland, so how serious were NFL scouts about Davis? ]

Well, after his Combine workout, Davis was the talk of Indianapolis, running a 4.3 40-yard dash, scoring a vertical leap of 42 inches, and this was at 6-foot-3, 254 pounds. Davis' draft stock soared, and he was selected sixth overall by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2006 NFL Draft.

Well, a prospective Commanders' pick might have had his Vernon Davis Combine workout this week in Indianapolis. Ohio State linebacker Sonny Styles was already considered a top 10 prospect entering the Combine. Styles was measured at 6-5, 244 pounds. His vertical was 43.5 inches. How much explosive power does one need to possess to get 244 pounds 43.5 inches off the floor?

Styles also ran a 4.4 40-yard dash (did I mention he weighed in at 244 pounds?) His broad jump was 11 feet 2 inches. In the case of Styles, already being considered a top prospect, Mel Kuiper Jr., in his mock draft earlier in the week, projected Styles going at No. 7 overall to the Commanders.

But now with Styles' Thursday workout, it is very conceivable Styles could go higher in the draft. This, coupled with Miami defensive end Rueben Bain's latest update from Indianapolis. Scouts knew Bain possessed short arms, but how short are they? Thursday, Bain was measured at 6-foot-2, 263 pounds. He was also measured at 30 7/8 inch arm length. How significant is this? Well, 30 7/8 inch arm length is not only shorter than expected but also the third shortest of any defensive end in NFL combine history.

The Commanders need a pass rusher. Even with those short arms, Bain often dominated his opponents in 2025. The Commanders could also use a gifted linebacker like Styles. For now, all we can do is begin to notice next week whether Bain falls in mock drafts and whether Styles rises higher.
