Coachella Valley beats Del Sol for school's first CIF title in 19 years

Prior to Saturday, Coachella Valley High School had last won a CIF Southern Section title in 2007. The boys' soccer team won it that year, and the school has since switched leagues in an effort to get as many of its teams in various sports back to the CIF playoffs for a shot to win another championship.

Several of those teams have come close, including the school's football team, which made semifinals appearances in 2023 and 2025.

On Saturday, 19 years since the school's last CIF title, its girls' soccer team finally broke through.

Coachella Valley's 3-2 over Del Sol (Oxnard) came after falling behind within the first six minutes. The Arabs bounced back to score three consecutive goals before allowing another with 24 minutes remaining and ultimately holding onto the lead to secure the win.

"We kept talking about how this wasn't going to be the game that we lose," sophomore striker Jaylynn Hernandez said.

Milagros Gamboa scored with 11:54 remaining in the first half, on assists from Marisa Medrano-Molina and Hernandez, to tie the game. Then, after the intermission, Hernandez scored fewer than three minutes into the second half to give the Arabs a lead they would never relinquish.

Daniela Pineda scored what would be the game-winning goal with 31:47 remaining to give the Arabs a 3-1 lead. Coachella Valley then had to hold that lead for the remainder of the game.

"If feels good to score that game-winning goal," Pineda said. "It's my senior, so I'm so glad to finish it off this way."

Coachella Valley (17-1-2) ran to the championship with just one loss all season. That came on Dec. 8 versus Palm Desert. The Arabs' run to the championship included 17 consecutive games without a loss, and 16 wins.

The Arabs are expected to be back on the field Tuesday for a CIF regional playoff game. But no matter what happens from here, the school has secured the championship that previous generations have been unable to secure.

For that reason, dozens of former players were in attendance to watch history being made. They individually embraced and congratulated head coach Francisco Morales, who has coached the team for the last 15 years and guided the program to four semifinal games during that stretch.

"You won this for all of us," former star midfielder Maricarmen Aceves told the team in a quiet moment as her eyes welled with tears.
