Holi Crackdown: Mumbai Traffic Police Issue 16,727 Challans, Collect Nearly ₹2 Crore In Fines In 19 Hours

Mumbai: In view of Holi and Dhulivandan celebrations, the Mumbai Traffic Police conducted a special enforcement drive across the city to curb traffic violations and ensure public safety.

As large numbers of citizens gather on roads to celebrate the festival, authorities anticipated possible violations of traffic rules. Accordingly, special nakabandi (checkpoints) were set up at major junctions, roads and highways across Mumbai. Strict action was taken against offences such as drunk driving, overspeeding, riding without helmets, triple-seat riding and other traffic violations.
The drive was carried out between 00:00 hrs and 19:00 hrs on March 3, 2026.

Drunk Driving: A total of 159 cases were registered against motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol. Court proceedings have been initiated in these cases, and the process of licence suspension is underway.
Major Violations and Penalties:
Riding Without Helmet: 4,317 challans issued; ₹42,97,000 fine collected.
Causing Obstruction to Free Flow of Traffic: 2,532 challans; ₹29,64,000 fine.
Jumping Signal: 610 challans; ₹5,90,000 fine.
Driving Without Valid Licence (MDL): 431 challans; ₹3,89,500 fine.
Triple-Seat Riding: Action against 530 riders; ₹5,27,000 fine.
No Entry/One-Way Violations: 278 motorists penalised; ₹3,12,500 fine.
Honking Violations: Action against 2 motorists; ₹1,000 fine.
Wrong-Side Driving: 20 vehicles sent to court.
Speed Limit Violations: 4,485 challans; ₹8,29,100 fine.
Other Violations (Grand Total Category): 2,603 cases; ₹18,67,650 fine.
In total, 16,727 challans were issued within 19 hours, and fines amounting to ₹1,99,91,650 were collected during the special drive.
Officials said the action was effectively carried out using CCTV surveillance, the e-challan system and breath analysers.
The Mumbai Traffic Police has appealed to citizens to celebrate festivals responsibly and strictly adhere to traffic rules, prioritising safety for themselves and others.
