WR who was pursued by Broncos in 2025 set to hit free agency

The New England Patriots plan to release star wide receiver Stefon Diggs, according to a report from NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

The move will become official after the NFL's new league year begins on March 11. Once released, the 32-year-old Diggs will become an unrestricted free agent.

This is a notable development for the Denver Broncos because they attempted to sign Diggs during NFL free agency last year. Speaking at the Super Bowl last month, Diggs said he was "close" to signing with the Broncos — in part due to his connection with former teammate Davis Webb — but he ultimately opted to sign with New England instead.

Diggs is a four-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro with seven 1,000-yard seasons, but circumstances have changed since Denver pursued him in 2025. In December, Diggs was charged with felony strangulation or suffocation and misdemeanor assault and battery charges following an alleged incident with his personal chef on Dec. 2. He pleaded not guilty on Feb. 13, and a pretrial hearing has been set for April 1.

Diggs could now face a significant suspension during the 2026 NFL season after totaling 85 receptions for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns last fall. It remains to be seen if the Broncos will still have interest in the veteran receiver following the December allegations and charges.
