Significant economic impact for the country
Speaking during a media briefing in Pretoria on Wednesday, Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, said the event would have a significant economic and promotional impact for the country.
“Fifty four of the best golfers in the world will be here. And LIV Golf is not just a golf tournament; it is a global sporting and cultural festival that combines sport, music, entertainment and tourism,” McKenzie said.
Among the star players expected to participate are Jon Rahm, Cameron Smith, Bryson DeChambeau and South Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen.
Premium setting
The Club at Steyn City is a luxury venue built around a championship 18-hole golf course set within scenic parkland along the Jukskei River.
Known for its pristine conditions and tranquil surroundings, the course provides a premium setting for major sporting and entertainment events.
McKenzie said discussions were already underway with Steyn City to extend the tournament for several more years.
“We are also pleased that discussions are already underway with Steyn City to renew the tournament for several more years.
“In fact, the scale of the event is expected to increase further, with future editions potentially accommodating up to 95 000 spectators, making it the biggest event on the LIV calendar, eclipsing even Australia,” he said.
Global events
The minister added that hosting the event sends a strong signal internationally about South Africa’s ability to stage major global events.
“It tells the world that South Africa is open – a country of unity, peace and cohesion. It tells the world that South Africa can host global events. And it tells the world that South Africa remains a destination for sport, tourism and culture.”
