The Las Vegas Raiders announced Friday morning that they will be cutting ties to last year’s starting quarterback, Geno Smith.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Smith will be cut next week, barring a trade. By cutting Smith, the Raiders will open up $8 million in salary cap space.
Smith signed a two-year, $75 million extension after being traded from the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for a 2025 third-round pick. Smith earned $40 million in 2025, all of which was fully guaranteed.
Smith threw for over 3,000 yards and 19 touchdowns; however, he also threw 17 interceptions, which was the most since he was a rookie.
This move isn’t a surprise. The Raiders plan on drafting Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza as the No. 1 draft pick in this year's draft.
So what’s next for Smith? Several teams are already expressing interest in Smith, including the New York Jets.
The Jets are said to be ready to sign two free-agent quarterbacks, and Smith may be one of them. Another team that could be in the mix could be the Miami Dolphins.
The Dolphins are also expected to cut starter Tua Tagovailoa, so that might also be another possible landing spot for Smith.
From the looks of it, Geno Smith won’t be out of a job for long.
