Commanders LT Laremy Tunsil makes history again

Washington Commanders left tackle Laremy Tunsil is not only a terrific football player, but he also happens to be a smart businessman. Earlier this week, Tunsil and the Commanders agreed to a contract extension for two years at $60.02 million. Washington now has Tunsil under contract through the 2028 season.

As for Tunsil, he resets the offensive tackle market — again. He also becomes the first offensive lineman to average $30 million per season. Did we tell you that Tunsil represents himself?

Most amazingly, Tunsil has reset the tackle market twice before, becoming the first offensive lineman to average $20 million per season — and $25 million per season. Tunsil, 31, was a first-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft and has now signed three contract extensions, which is almost unheard of in the NFL outside of quarterbacks and 49ers left tackle Trent Williams.

Salary cap expert Joel Corry of CBS Sports weighed in on the various contracts handed out this week during the first week of free agency and Tunsil's new deal caught his attention.

Laremy Tunsil, who represents himself, became the NFL's first $30 million-per-year offensive lineman. The left tackle received a two-year, $60.2 million extension from the Washington Commanders with $61.5 million in guarantees, including $52.655 million fully guaranteed at signing. His $32.5 million signing bonus is a record for offensive linemen.

Tunsil was also the first offensive lineman to hit the $20 million-per-year and $25 million-per-year marks in 2020 and 2023, respectively. His preference has been to sign shorter-term deals (no longer than three-year extensions) so he can continually reap the benefit of changing market conditions. By contrast, Tristan Wirfs, who is elite at both left and right tackle, signed a five-year, $140.625 million extension with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2024. If Tunsil continues to play at a high level, he will be in line for another big payday in 2028 when he is 33.

Tunsil has set himself up for another lucrative extension in two years if his play remains strong. Washington traded multiple draft picks to acquire Tunsil from the Houston Texans last March, and he was phenomenal for the Commanders. Not only did he remain elite as a pass protector in 2025, but he also impressed Washington with his run blocking. At the conclusion of the season, GM Adam Peters was clear that extending Tunsil was a primary offseason goal.
