CBS reporter Lauren Shehadi interviewed the Villanova coach during a first-half timeout. Willard’s response immediately went viral when he joked about threatening to “fire” his coaching staff.

"I'm gonna fire my staff. Yeah, I am … The only thing I'm gonna do is fire them and get a new staff."

Willard managed to take the Wildcats to March Madness in his first season with the program. However, the former Maryland Terrapins coach wasn’t pleased at all with Utah State’s ability to dominate in the paint.

“I’m gonna fire my staff,” Willard told the CBS Sports reporter. “Yeah, I am … The only thing I’m gonna do is fire them and get a new staff.”

Utah State beat Villanova in the final score, but the Aggies also outscored the Wildcats by 16 points down low. In fact, 42 of Utah State’s 86 points came from points in the paint.

While Willard’s joke has certainly been taken out of context by some, it’s clear that Villanova has some major work to do before next season after being eliminated from March Madness.

The Big East program is only one of three teams in this year’s NCAA Tournament, joining Connecticut and St. John’s. However, the other two powerhouses came away with wins in their Round of 64 matchups.
