Ontario farmer returns litterbug's trash to their address in viral clip

The moral of the story is: Don’t dump your garbage onto a farmer’s field, especially when that farmer is in a bad mood.

An Instagram post recently uploaded by Forest Lawn Farms in Caledon, Ont., shows farmer Dave Snyder coming across a pile of trash on his cornfield. In a bonehead maneuver, some of the trash the litterbug offloaded onto the field included their home address.

A clip from last spring, to be sure, Snyder told the Sun , but it’s a useful lesson for those who would pollute the soil during the upcoming planting season. Snyder adds his lousy mood at the time prompted him to do the neighbourly thing and kindly return the waste to the owner’s nearby home.

“We started working pretty early that morning, like 3, 4 in the morning and we came across one of the farms,” Snyder said. “I was just going by and we had planted a crop and you like going by and seeing the corn popping up in rows and you’re proud of the crop and we’ve had problems with people dumping stuff in this driveway before and I was just driving by and saw all the garbage.”

After discovering the pile of junk, Snyder hopped in his John Deere tractor with a scoop and headed to the return address.

“So I thought, ‘F—.’ I didn’t really want to go in to clean it up,” Snyder says. “I was p—ed off and I was looking at the box and the envelopes. There were so many with the same address on them. Then I just googled the address and it said it was just eight minutes away, and eight minutes by tractor is like 40 km/h so it usually takes you twice as long, so 16 minutes away. I thought, “F— it. I’ll go down and may as well f—in’ return it.”

‘Not all heroes wear capes’

“I have some stuff of hers,” Snyder tells the person answering the door in the Instagram clip. “Do you want it dumped in the driveway, or where would you like it dumped? Your name was on the box and everything and it was dumped in my field. I’m a farmer.”

Snyder then proceeds to dump the trash right back where it belonged.

“Not all heroes wear capes,” commented one Instagram user.

Not the first time

It’s happened more than once, Snyder says, to the point where he and his family now joke about it, though he admits he gets irritated more than most. Although Snyder says his team has handled bigger litter loads such as asphalt, shingles and more.

“It’s a bit of a joke now because everybody finds garbage: the guys that work for us, my sons and that, they ask, ‘Are we taking this stuff back?'” he said. “To be honest with you I get too worked up over that stuff so I try to not get so excited.”

Don’t dump

Illegal dumping is taken pretty seriously in Ontario, with fines topping more than $100,000 in some municipalities . The province has a webpage on what to do if you find illegal waste on your property.
