Shelby Houlihan Runs 10th-Fastest 10k In American History At The TEN

· Yahoo Sports

At the sixth edition of Sound Running's "The TEN", 1500m American record holder, Shelby Houlihan broke the tape in her 10,000m debut, crossing in 30:50.10 after running most of the race solo on a humid Southern California night.

With American record aspirations, Houlihan started on pace thanks to pacers Claire Yerby and India Weir and the pace lights, but ultimately felt the adverse effects of doing all the work without anyone to share the workload once both pacers stepped off.

Granted, Houlihan did have some company for the 2400m thanks to Seema (IND), who ran right on her heels for a mile and a half. The 33-year-old American wound up closing in the second- fastest lap of the day, 1:09.52, becoming the 17th American woman to break 31 minutes in the 10k.

Her 10k debut race also resulted in moving up to No. 10 on the all-time lists, bumping Deena Kastor down to No. 11 after edging her out by under half of a second.

Marathoner Jess McClain (Brooks) finished runner-up in 31:15.49, with Allie Buchalski (Brooks Beast) finishing third in 31:29.06.
