Major League Baseball's trade deadline is very far away right now, but that doesn't mean teams around the league won't start looking at potential options to pursue, especially starting pitching. Starting pitching continues to be the most important thing that any team can go after, and certain teams need it more than others.

Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report named two teams that could use starters at the moment, which include the New York Mets and Atlanta Braves. It's not going to be surprising when the Mets and Braves are both looking at similar arms at the deadline, which could result in them losing players to each other. One of the names he listed was Nick Pivetta as a potential trade option for both squads.

“Yes, Nick Pivetta is on here. And no, you don't have to agree with it. After all, the Padres are still trying to dethrone the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West.

"FanGraphs gives them only a 1.5 percent chance to do so, plus a modest 22 percent chance to make the playoffs in any capacity. And besides, the franchise could look to shed payroll before or after their upcoming sale.

“Pivetta would be a hot item on the trade market if he were made available. He had the best season of his career in 2025, posting a 2.87 ERA over 181.2 innings. Even before that, his stuff always rated well, suggesting such a breakout was inevitable.”

Pivetta is sneakily a decent arm and should be wanted by teams around the league. It's always tough to get a feel for what the San Diego Padres want to do at the trade deadline, as they've consistently made moves that just don't make a whole lot of sense for where things stand, but that could be changing now that San Diego is in a bit of a different position than it usually is.
