Peel Regional Police advised the public of an underwater search and recovery operation on Sunday morning in the city’s north end after a canoe capsized on the lake overnight with two people on board.
While a woman in her 30s was rescued Saturday night by fire crews, officials recovered the body of a man in his 30s on Sunday afternoon, Const. Ty Bell said, after deploying their air support unit and marine rescue crews for “several hours.”
Bell said both boaters were not wearing life-jackets at the time and the water temperature was about 5 C, “which will make you hypothermic, but not as fast as drowning.”
Post-mortem expected on Monday
“We’ll get more answers on the cause of death when the coroner does the post-mortem tomorrow,” he told the Toronto Sun, adding that the lake has a peak depth of about 36 feet.
Bell said first responders were called to the conservation area, near Sandalwood Pkwy. E and Hwy. 410, at about 9:30 p.m. on Saturday night. Emergency crews were able to “quickly” locate the female and the canoe.
She was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
Bell said the park was closed at the time, but if not for people on the shore, “this could have been a double fatal.”

‘Odd’ set of circumstances: Cops
Regardless, Bell said police were investigating what he called a “definitely odd” set of circumstances.
“I don’t know anybody who goes boating at that time of night and at this time of the year,” he said. “There are definitely a lot of questions that need to be answered here.”
Police had also reportedly seized the woman’s vehicle and Bell said they were still trying to determine why the two were out on the lake and the status of their relationship.
He said 22 Division is conducting the probe.
