313 pounds of power has Gabe Nwosu’s leg heading to Steelers’ rookie minicamp

To say the Pittsburgh Steelers are thinking outside the box when it comes to the punter position would be an understatement.

According to the Senior Specialist All-Star Game X account, the Steelers have invited Penn State punter Gabe Nwosu to rookie minicamp.

Punters normally aren’t very exciting, but Nwosu breaks the mold.

The interesting thing about Nwosu is he’s built like a lineman. The man is 6-foot-6 and 313 pounds. Talk about an absolute unit.

To get an idea of just how big he is compared to other punters, most players at Nwosu’s position are in the neighborhood of 200 pounds, give or take.

A former five-star recruit, Nwosu also has a rocket for a leg that will interest the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In his first year as the full-time punter, Nwosu blasted eight punts over 50 yards last season, including four over 60 yards and a long of 68 yards.

In all, Nwosu averaged 46 yards per punt in 2025 and dropped 39.5% of them inside the 20.

Before that, Nwosu was a kickoff specialist, a role he continued after becoming the full-time punter.

BNBFootball.com ranked Nwosu as its 13th-best punter in the 2026 NFL Draft.

“I’ve been working on just trying to be the ultimate (specialist), whether that be field goals, kickoffs, punts, being able to hold, whatever they need, I need to be that guy,” Nwosu said during the pre-draft process, per StateCollege.com.

Only two punters ended up getting drafted this year.

Michigan State’s Ryan Eckley was taken by the Denver Broncos in Round 6, and Florida’s Tommy Doman was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in Round 7.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have had a revolving door at punter the last few years, but they certainly don’t have a dire need at the position.

Cameron Johnston was supposed to be the starter in 2024 but suffered a season-ending injury after one game.

Pittsburgh signed Corliss Waitman to replace him that season and the veteran beat out Johnston for the job in 2025.

Now, Johnston is back again after bouncing around with the Bills and New York Giants last season.

Of course, seeing as how he’s undrafted and just a rookie minicamp invite, Nwosu is going to have an Everest-like climb in order to stick in Pittsburgh.

We’ll see if the Penn State product can break the mold when the Steelers convene for rookie minicamp, which is expected to take place from May 8-10.
