How Franz Wagner's absence will help Pistons in must-win Game 5

It looks like the Detroit Pistons may catch a break entering a must-win Game 5 at home.
Orlando Magic star Paolo Banchero said at the team's morning shootaround on Wednesday, April 29 that he doesn't expect Franz Wagner to play in the pivotal game, which will take place at 7 p.m. at Little Caesars Arena.

The Michigan alumnus is listed as questionable with a right calf strain and exited Game 4 in Orlando midway through the third quarter on Monday.

Wagner did not participate in Orlando’s shootaround this morning, I’m told.
The forward has been key to Orlando's success this season, and his absence could give the Pistons some help as they fight to avoid elimination at home. They fell behind in the series 3-1 following Monday's 94-88 loss.
According to Cleaning The Glass, the Magic performed like a 51-win team when Wagner was on the court this season, and a 38-win team when he was on the bench or sidelined with an injury. They measurably improve on both sides of the court when he plays. He's a plus-5.1 in the playoffs, the highest mark on Orland's roster.
Wagner was limited to just 34 games in 2025-26 due to an ankle sprain and other injuries, and averaged 20.6 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game.
His absence would open the door for more minutes for wing Jamal Cain, who led Orlando's bench with 23 minutes played and tallied eight points, nine rebounds and two thunderous dunks. The Magic also would lean on forward Tristan Da Silva, who started 34 games during the regular season.
