Central hires Jonathon Vonesh as girls basketball coach

Apr. 30—GRAND FORKS — Grand Forks Central has hired Jonathon Vonesh to be the next head girls basketball coach, the school announced Thursday.

Vonesh has a lengthy background in coaching in the area. He was head coach of the boys basketball program at East Grand Forks Sacred Heart for three years in the mid-2000s, then became the head coach at his alma mater Central Valley for four years. He was head coach of the girls basketball program at Climax-Fisher for eight seasons from 2011-2019.
Most recently, Vonesh was an an assistant coach under Mike Mathison with the Knights the past two seasons. Mathison resigned in the offseason to focus on other professional opportunities.
"Jonathon brings stability to our program, serving as our head C-squad coach and assistant coach under Mathison," Central athletic director Tony Bina said. "The girls are familiar with his coaching style and understand his expectations as a coach.
"Jonathon puts a strong emphasis on coaching fundamentals necessary to succeed and relates well to the girls building confidence and getting the most out of his players. He will continue to build the culture that was developed under Mathison, and bring new ideas to the program."
Vonesh owns a realty company based out of Grand Forks. He and his wife Nichole have four children.

"This is a proud community with a strong tradition, and I'm excited to build a culture centered on hard work, accountability, and team-first basketball. I'm excited to connect with players at every level — from youth through varsity — and help grow the game in our community.
