UIL baseball playoffs: Central Texas teams claim wins in Game 1 of bi-district series

Despite scattered thunderstorms, most Central Texas high school baseball teams got in Game 1 of their best-of-three bi-district playoff series Thursday as the UIL postseason gets underway. 

Weiss and Hendrickson mark the first local teams to advance to the area round after both started their series on Wednesday and recorded sweeps.

Here’s the playoff roundup for the Austin area. 

Class 6A Division I

Lake Travis 4, Westwood 2: Dallas Witcher’s two-run single in the bottom of the sixth broke a 2-2 tie and pushed the Cavs to the win. Luke McBride, who marked the only player to tally two hits in the contest, ripped an RBI double and James Tudor drove in a run with a walk to account for Lake Travis’ other runs.

Cooper Webb tossed a two-hitter with six strikeouts to earn the win. 

Will Baker’s RBI single in the second and Juan Perez’s run-scoring double in the sixth led Westwood.  

Bowie 1, Cedar Ridge 0: Liam Bruner threw a five-hit shutout with five strikeouts and Kai Loo drove in the game’s only run with a triple in the top of the first to lead the Bulldogs. Loo finished 2-for-2 with a walk. 

Sawyer Neugent tossed a three-hitter and struck out six to pace the Raiders. Game 2 is Saturday. 

Johnson 12, Laredo United 1 (6): Joseph Cardona Jr. drove in three runs, Gannon Plummer went 3-for-5 with a triple and RBI and Reed Dierschke struck out five in five innings as the Jaguars rolled to an easy win. 

Selvin Garrett finished 2-for-3 with a double and drove in two runs and Parker George went 2-for-4 with an RBI as part of a 12-hit performance by Johnson. Gavin Perez ripped an RBI double in other notable offense for Johnson. 

Class 6A Division II 

Dripping Springs 9, Vista Ridge 1: Breydan Madeley went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and both Anthony Delgado and Cade Sanders finished with two hits and two RBIs as the Tigers took an impressive win to open the playoffs. 

Dripping Springs finished with 12 hits, with Sam Branyon also recording a multi-hit game. 

Cade Sanders, Nixon Badilla and Oscar Johnson combined on the mound for the Tigers, with Badilla striking out five in 2 2/3 shutout innings. 

Colby Wilson, Will Johnson, Delgado, Sanders and Badilla all had RBI extra-base hits. 

Westlake 1, Vandegrift 0: Hayes Brodhead threw a two-hit shutout with four strikeouts and Hayden Chung drove in Lane Johnson with a double in the top of the fourth as the Chaps took a pitcher’s duel to open the series. 

Karston Coffey tossed a complete game, scattering five hits, to lead Vandegrift. 

Class 5A Division I

Anderson 6, East View 2: Darek Paiz went 2-for-3 with a three-run homer, Vinny Franco only allowed one hit in 6 1/3 innings and both Bennett Wright and Cooper Chitsey had RBI hits as the Trojans built a 6-0 lead on their way to the win. 

Connor Comeau finished 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored in other notable offense for Anderson. 

Brandt Eastman hit a two-run double to lead the Patriots. 

Rouse 8, Smithson Valley 2: Jacob Soliz went 3-for-3 with a walk, two RBIs and two runs scored, Cristian Caro belted a two-run double and both Adolfo Erives and Liam Mongold had two hits and an RBI as the Raiders overcame a 2-0 deficit in the first inning. 

Jacob Sainz scattered three hits and a walk over five innings to pace Rouse on the mound, with Jack Doss throwing two shutout innings in relief. 

Joe Bury finished 2-for-3, Brody Sharp doubled and Colby Driskell had an RBI single in other notable offense for the Raiders. 

Cedar Park 6, Boerne 4: Dominic Naylor hit a grand slam and Kayaan Kotharia threw three innings of scoreless relief as the Timberwolves overcame a 3-0 deficit after the first. 

Naylor’s blast came in the third, then Owen Mansfield and Hudson Cuevas reached base and scored on a Greyhounds error in the sixth to break a 4-4 tie.

Cooper Camacho tallied two hits and Mansfield and Evan Daly both drew two walks in other notable offense for Cedar Park. 

Hendrickson 8, McCallum 0: Braedan Borger finished 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs, Dylan Wells struck out seven in six shutout innings and Wesley Burkhard had a two-run single as the Hawks closed out the series. 

Logan Clark and AJ Fowler both had two hits and an RBI and Rhett Peterson, Cole McCracken and Dylan Wells all had two hits in other noteworthy offense for Hendrickson. 

Hendrickson 6, McCallum 5: JJ Coston struck out 10 and only allowed two earned runs and Borger went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs to lead the Hawks in Game 1 of the series. 

Jake Laake also had three hits for Hendrickson, which used a four-run third inning to take control. Wells belted a two-run triple, Hunter Hicks ripped an RBI double and both Clark and McCracken tallied two hits in other notable offense for the Hawks. 

Mason White went 3-for-4 with a double and RBI and Blaise Kizer finished 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs to pace McCallum, which pushed across three runs in the seventh and nearly forced extra innings. 

Class 5A Division II

Liberty Hill 4, Kerrville Pieper 1: Journey Lowery went 3-for-3 with an RBI triple and Jordan Andrews struck out six in five innings and belted a run-scoring single as the Panthers began what they hope is a long playoff run. 

Carson Sharp had a sacrifice fly and threw two innings of scoreless relief, Jaxson Richter finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and Greyson McVan went 2-for-3 with two runs scored in other notable performances for Liberty Hill. Game 2 is Saturday. 

Weiss 10, LASA 0: Thomas Botkin struck out five in 4 1/3 scoreless innings and helped himself at the plate with a two-run single, Gabe Hernandez went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Jordan Benjamin belted an RBI triple as the Wolves completed the series sweep. 

Torri Limon had a two-run single and Rhema Benjamin and Andrew Hunter both drove in runs in other notable offense for Weiss. 

Weiss 18, LASA 1: Jordan Benjamin went 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs, Jace Rodriguez finished 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs and Patrick Brock went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs as the Wolves rolled in Game 1. 

Other scores: Georgetown leads Bastrop 6-2 in a game that was suspended in the sixth inning and postponed until Friday.
