Joe Gomez: Anfield Boos “The Last Thing We Want”
· Yahoo Sports
As the final whistle blew at Anfield on Saturday after another underwhelming performance by the Reds in a 1-1 draw with Chelsea, supporters let their feelings be know with a chorus of boos. Disjointed play and a distinct lack of energy left supporters frustrated yet again. After the match, substitute and club veteran Joe Gomez said the boos are understandable based on the performances, but it does leave a feeling of hurt.
“We feel it. It’s the last thing we want. For us older boys who have experienced so many good times here, it does hurt. If it didn’t then you shouldn’t still be here. We want to make it right.”

“It’s just a reaction to the whole year, and that’s fair enough. The fans pay their hard-earned money to come and watch us and they’re entitled to show their frustration, in the same way they cheer us. I think we get it, we understand it. I hope you could see the urgency that we want to win. It’s not a case of giving over.”
Boos also rained down earlier in the match when youngster Rio Ngumoah was substituted off in the 67th minute. Ngumoah was one of the few bright spots in the squad against Chelsea, providing the assist for Liverpool’s goal and being a consistent threat down the left side on the dribble. Supporters were baffled to see the 17 year old pulled off while underperformers Cody Gakpo and Jeremie Frimpong were left on the pitch. Gomez said while the young attacker was playing well, he was getting really tired.
“To give a perspective, from the bench, Rio, he’s young and he played in the high-intense game. I don’t know how many games he started this year, but physically, he was tired and I think those are the subtle things behind the scenes you probably don’t realize. But we get it: Rio is a top player and has the ability to be a bright star for us in the future. But it was the later stages of the game and he’s tired.”
With just two matches left in the season, there is little chance left for Liverpool players to change the narrative and leave supporters feeling optimistic about the future. The final match of the season will be played at Anfield, and will also serve as a farewell to Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson, so hopefully there is a reason to cheer rather than boo on the day.
