The Toronto Transit Commission plans to shut down service on the entire Finch West LRT line from May 15 to May 18 for “important upgrades and enhancements to further improve system reliability and performance,” according to Metrolinx .
The closure will begin on Friday at 2:30 a.m. and run through the entire long weekend. Regular service is expected to resume Tuesday at 4 a.m.
Shuttle buses will operate along Finch Ave. West during the closure, Metrolinx said.
Problems have plagued line since launch
Line 6 has been plagued with a number of issues since it opened for service some five months ago.
Shortly after its December 2025 opening, the LRT line was met with complaints from riders who all shared the sentiment that travel times were slow and it didn’t come with priority signalling at intersections .
Line 6 also suffered from a number of weather-related closures and more than 350 delays in its first month of service.
Weeks after its opening, Toronto council adopted a motion to speed up the city’s LRT and streetcar lines by implementing “more aggressive” transit signal priority at surface intersections. Mayor Olivia Chow hoped the installation would be done by this spring.
“Before the FIFA World Cup, we’ll have all the signal priorities into the track,” Chow said at the time.
Training will also take place during closure
Metrolinx said multiple things will take place during Line 6’s closure this weekend.
The agency said it’s getting as much work done during the long weekend to reduce “the need for multiple repeated service interruptions later.”
It also noted the closure will allow the TTC to “train additional staff for key positions, using this window for hands-on training not possible while trains are running.”
Metrolinx said in a media release that the Victoria Day long weekend closure will also allow the route to improve on its 25% on-time performance increase since its opening.
