A Tennessee man known as “Chud the Builder” who livestreams himself hurling racial slurs at Black people to provoke a response is accused of attempted murder following a shooting Wednesday.

Dalton Eatherly, 28, was one of two people hurt when gunfire rang out next to the Montgomery County Courthouse in Clarksville, about 80 km northwest of Nashville.

“Thanks to the quick actions of our courthouse deputies, this situation was likely kept from becoming much worse,” Montgomery County Sheriff John Fuson said in a statement, reports ClarksvilleNow.com .

“Their dedication to keeping the courthouse safe was clearly demonstrated (Wednesday).”

The shooting occurred at about 1:15 p.m. when witnesses said Eatherly got into a confrontation with a man who then punched him, the report said, and three to four shots were fired.

Eatherly was taken to Vanderbilt Clarksville Hospital for treatment while the other victim was flown by helicopter to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville where he was listed in stable condition.

Man shot himself in arm during gunfire

District Attorney General Robert Nash told the outlet Eatherly was the person who opened fire and it appears he shot himself in the arm. Both men were taken into custody.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said Eatherly has now been charged with attempted murder, employing a firearm during a dangerous felony, aggravated assault, and reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon.

“It’s unfortunate that incidents like this are happening in our community,” Fuson said. “This kind of violence won’t be tolerated, and our office will work to make sure those responsible are held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.”

Due to the ongoing investigation, local authorities closed three county government buildings in the area on Thursday.

Donations flood fundraising campaign

After the charges were laid, donations began flooding into an online fundraising campaign created by Eatherly last year, which has nearly reached its $100,000 goal.

“I was fired from my previous contracting job after BLM (Black Lives Matter) activists targeted me over words I shared online — jokes and opinions they twisted to end my career,” he wrote in the appeal.

He said the money will go toward covering basic living expenses for his family, exploring legal options to fight slander and threats, and finding new ways to create a sustainable income.

Accused has history with police

Eatherly has a history with law enforcement in the state.

On May 9, he was arrested following an incident at a Nashville restaurant where he was told not to film inside the eatery and not be disruptive.

However, Fox affiliate WZTV reported Eatherly caused a disturbance by yelling, screaming, and making racial comments while dining at Bob’s Steak & Chop House.

Police say he refused to pay for the meal after ordering two full entrees, drinks and appetizers totalling $371.55 and was kicked out of the restaurant. He was later charged with theft of $1,000 or less and disorderly conduct.

Large following on social media

Eatherly has regularly written to his 225,000 followers on social platform X that he refers to Black people as “chimps” and “monkeys.”

“I will defend my life with lethal force,” he wrote May 7 . “Do not approach me with intent to threaten bodily harm.”

In November 2025, a video circulated on social media of Eatherly claiming he was an officer with the Clarksville Police Department.
