Cena was recently asked about his early standouts for the tournament, and while he was trying to evade the question as he typically masterfully does, he couldn’t keep his excitement contained about recent NXT signing Mason Rook.
“It’s no secret I think to those in the know that I chant with everybody else, ‘He’s big, he’s bad, he’ll bodyslam your dad.’ … If you don’t know who I’m talking about, I want you to go check that out. I’m a fan,” Cena told CBS Sports.
Rook recently commented on Cena’s social media mentions during the latest edition of NXT this past Tuesday. For two straight weeks, including his debut, Rook has laid out NXT Champion Tony D’Angelo. Clearly, there are big things planned for Rook, who has built a strong online following through his body of work in the U.K. The crowd at the WWE Performance Center has responded positively to Rook each week, chanting, “He’s big, he’s bad, he’ll bodyslam your dad,” just as they did in PROGRESS Wrestling, NORTH Wrestling, and Revolution Pro Wrestling.
Mason Rook is the de facto favorite in The John Cena Classic
Undoubtedly, Cena is clearly a big fan of Rook in a very public fashion. While Cena doesn’t hold an official title in WWE creative, his influence and input will be valued in his post-wrestling career.
Cena’s last match took place in December, with a submission loss to Gunther with a rear-naked choke/sleeper hold. Since then, he’s been adamant about the WWE’s future, being featured in a WrestleMania 42 segment with Danhausen and Kit Wilson, alongside his two-time WrestleMania opponent, The Miz.
Rook seems to be another who will get the proverbial "rub" from the Never Seen 17. There’s no doubt he’ll be put in a position to show out at The John Cena Classic and win the tournament named after one of his biggest fans.
