This past week, the USC baseball team wrapped up its regular season with a three-game series against Oregon up in Eugene. With huge Big Ten and NCAA Tournament implications at stake, it was a massive series for both teams as the Trojans and Ducks looked to add some signature wins to their resumes.

Fortunately for fans, the series more than delivered. Over three days of action, the two teams played 34 total innings, with all three contests decided by one run.

On Thursday, USC took the opener 2-1 in 11 innings. After ace Mason Edwards delivered a stellar pitching performance for the Trojans, Isaac Cadena hit a home run in the top of the 11th to give USC the lead. Closer Adam Troy survived an Oregon rally in the botttom of the 11th, and at long last, the Trojans finally had a ranked victory.

After Oregon evened up the series with a 4-3 win on Friday, the teams played the rubber game on Saturday. It was a thriller, as USC came back from an early 4-0 deficit to send the game to extra innings tied at five. In extras, both teams had multiple opportunities to score, before Oregon finally broke through on a walk-off bunt single in the bottom of the 14th to win 6-5.

Obviously, dropping the series is disappointing for USC, as taking two of three from Oregon would have been massive for the team’s resume. However, the Trojans should still hold their heads high, as this series was about as evenly matched as it gets. USC firmly established itself as one of the top teams in the Big Ten this season, which is definitely something to be proud of.

With the regular season now complete, the Trojans will head to the Big Ten Tournament, where they will be the No. 4 seed. They will open up tournament play in the quarterfinals on Friday against an opponent to be determined.
