One of the hallmarks of the Toronto Blue Jays’ starting rotation over the last few seasons has been the inclusion of Jose Berrios, who has started 138 games in his five-season stint in the Rogers Centre.
His 2025 season was no different, starting in 30 games for the Blue Jays, posting a record of 9-5, with an ERA of 4.17 and 138 strikeouts to his name. The Puerto Rican ace could’ve made more starting appearances given Toronto’s playoff run to the World Series, but wouldn’t get the chance as he missed the last chunk of the season due to inflammation in his right elbow.
The start of the season was all about getting back to the Major Leagues for Berrios, as he was down in the minor leagues of Toronto’s organization, spending time with both the Double-A Dunedin Blue Jays and the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons.
However, the two-time All-Star would struggle in the lower levels, posting a 14.09 ERA in his two games of Triple-A action, while also allowing six walks.

But it appears that these four appearances will be the only action that Berrios will see this season, as he underwent Tommy John surgery on Wednesday afternoon, as reported by Hazel Mae.
Blue Jays head coach John Schneider spoke with Mae about Berrios' procedure, explaining that it’s not the best outcome for the team or the 31-year-old starter.
“Berrios had surgery today to repair the stress fracture part of his elbow, and TJ ligament - the bone sitting on the ligament, causing some damage to it.. we knew that was a possibility when they went in.. not ideal for him, not ideal for us,” Schneider explained to Mae.
