Oliver Ekman-Larsson finally addressed the uncertainty surrounding his future while representing Sweden at the 2026 IIHF World Championship, but the veteran defenseman carefully avoided diving into speculation about Toronto’s offseason plans.
The 34-year-old acknowledged that changes could be coming to the Maple Leafs roster, though he stressed those decisions belong entirely to the organization’s leadership group.
“You never know. Something will probably happen with the team there, but exactly what that is, I don’t know,” Ekman-Larsson said while speaking to Swedish outlet Hockeysverige.
“I’m not going to speculate on those kinds of things. The people sitting above me, John, Mats, and the rest of the organization, are the ones making those decisions. With everything else, all I can do is focus on being my best every day and hope that’s enough.”
His comments arrive during a tense stretch for the Maple Leafs after the franchise missed the playoffs for the first time since 2016. Toronto responded by reshaping its front office, bringing in John Chayka to lead the front office and Mats Sundin as senior executive adviser. They are now aggressively exploring ways to rebuild a blueline that struggled throughout the season.
The organization has more than $22 million in projected cap space, creating flexibility for major roster changes.
Ekman-Larsson’s name surfaced heavily before the March trade deadline, especially after Toronto briefly scratched him for roster management reasons while exploring potential deals. Reports indicated the Maple Leafs demanded a steep return that included a first-round pick, a second-round pick, and a top prospect.
The Edmonton Oilers reportedly showed strong interest before ultimately backing away from negotiations because of the asking price.

Reflecting on that period, the veteran admitted the experience was difficult.
“It’s never fun. It was something new for me to go through in the middle of a season,” he explained. “I’ve been bought out before, and I’ve been traded before. But this was different.”
Despite the uncertainty, Ekman-Larsson has consistently expressed a desire to remain in Toronto. He is signed through 2028 on a 4-year, $14 million contract carrying a manageable $3.5 million cap hit, making him one of the more affordable veteran defensemen on the roster.
His modified no-trade clause also gives him meaningful control over potential destinations by allowing him to block trades to 16 teams.
This contract could quietly become a key factor as Chayka maps out Toronto’s blueline makeover this summer. At the same time, Ekman-Larsson may have earned himself some real staying power.
