NFL Analyst Ranks Saints' Tyler Shough As The Fifth Best QB In The Division

QB rankings are all the rage during the NFL's down time. While waiting for OTAs, mandatory minicamp, and training camp to begin, ranking quarterbacks is content gold and generates good, honest discussion.

It's hard to find a quarterback with more good will and eyes on 2026 than Tyler Shough following his 2025 play down the stretch. The New Orleans Saints are adding firepower and all indications are the team has found their franchise QB.

The team has been searching for the long term answer at quarterback since Drew Brees retired.

But not everyone is convinced the Louisville quarterback should be placed on top of any ranking list, let alone the NFC South.

NFL analyst Arye Pulli ranked the quarterbacks in the South and two Falcons quarterbacks are ahead of Shough along with Baker Mayfield and Bryce Young.

“With a strong season in 2026 — one that he's expected to have — Shough could leap all the way to the top two spots. However, the simple fact is that he's only played in 11 games in his one-year NFL career. It's hard not to rank Shough higher solely on untapped potential, but that potential has yet to be realized. He'll have an opportunity to show that he's better than the four players above him in 2026.”

Now, this is a fair argument. With limited playing time, it's hard to come to a definitive evaluation. Still, optimism is there for the second-year quarterback. As far as Michael Penix and Tua being ahead of Shough, the experience factor was the reasoning as well.

“Penix showed plenty of flashes during his 2025 campaign with the Falcons before he was sidelined with an injury. He threw for almost 2,000 yards in just nine starts and proved to the league that his arm talent is legitimate. The only thing holding Penix back is his lingering knee injuries. He's suffered several season-ending knee injuries, dating back to his college days at Indiana. He's another player with the potential to be in the top two spots after next season.”

Both Penix and Tua have injury concerns. I'm confident once the games begin, Shough will separate himself and challenge Mayfield for the top spot in the South.
