The Cleveland Cavaliers’ 2025-26 season is preparing to conclude on Monday night, making offseason speculation more logical than before.
Things immediately went left for Cleveland after failing to close out the New York Knicks in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals, as the organization has now fallen behind 3-0 in the series and trails by 19 points at halftime of Game 4.
So, what’s next for the Cavaliers after their inevitable third-round playoff exit? Well, it’s been rumored that Cleveland could shake up the NBA by reuniting with franchise legend LeBron James. On Sunday, the Athletic’s Jason Lloyd chimed in on the subject and provided the public with a new update on a potential NBA-altering James-Cavaliers reunion.
"Making it to the conference finals was a breakthrough for this organization and worth celebrating, but the players' energy and effort since they got here leave plenty to be desired," Lloyd reported Sunday.
"An important offseason awaits, with contract decisions to make on (Donovan) Mitchell and (James) Harden and the inevitable debate on whether to pursue Giannis Antetokounmpo. LeBron James looms over all of this, too."
Based on Lloyd’s report, the status of James returning to Cleveland to finish his remarkable NBA career is still up in the air. It’s important to remember that in addition to having the option of joining the Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks, or the Los Angeles Lakers, James could theoretically retire after 23 years in the big leagues.
Of course, a player of James’ caliber would probably enjoy a farewell tour, but he could bypass one if he feels content with moving on from the NBA this summer.
If James opts to remain an active NBA player and take his talents back to Cleveland, the franchise that drafted him in 2003 and won their first-ever title in 2016 with him as their go-to scoring option, it’s reasonable to assume the 2026-27 campaign would have a movie-like feel to it.
Expect James to make a decision on his future soon.
