Celtic Reignite Interest In This Emerging Midfield Target – Why He Would Be An Exciting Addition

If a recent report from The Herald is believed to be true, Celtic are back in the hunt for Jakob Breum. They chased the Dane over the past two windows and have now reignited interest, with Go Ahead Eagles resigned to losing their versatile midfield ace in the summer.

The 22-year-old Denmark youth international progressed through the academy ranks of Ubberud, Næsby and OB before breaking into the latter’s first-team squad at the age of 16. He went on to feature more than 50 times for the Odense side before plying his trade in the Netherlands in favour of a transfer to Go Ahead Eagles.

What He Would Bring To This Celtic Side

Breum has since been a regular for the Eredivisie outfit, netting 20 goals and assisting 15 times in 105 appearances across competitions. His creative spark as a ‘number 10’ has caught the eyes of the Hoops, who opted not to meet Go Ahead’s £6.5m valuation for their prized asset.

Predominantly an attacking midfielder, Breum has shown his versatility by slotting into a slightly deeper role. He was initially a wide attacker, but was later moved to a central role, which better showcased his attributes. With his current deal set to expire next summer, Go Ahead would rather accept an offer than lose him for nothing a year later.

Why Celtic Are Pursuing Breum

Despite conquering a domestic double, Celtic were far from their normal self in terms of form and consistency. Veteran Martin O’Neill, appointed as an interim chief, exceeded expectations and is now under consideration for a permanent role along with other candidates. Shaun Maloney is in contention for the Head of Football Operations position, and the management are now accelerating transfer talks, as they left it late and ended up with mediocrity over the past couple of windows.

Meanwhile, the Hoops already have Benjamin Nygren, who settled in exquisitely as an advanced playmaker. He finished his maiden campaign with 21 goals and 9 assists in 58 outings, and his poaching trait in and around the box has impressed clubs south of the border. The Scottish champions are now sweating over his future, thus sweating over the Swedish ace’s Parkhead future.

Although they also have Luke McCowan and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who fit in a similar role, neither of them has done enough to cement a starting spot week in and week out. Breum’s flexibility would boost Celtic’s midfield options, with the Danish youngster expected to attune to the aggression and physicality of Premiership football.
