St. Louis Cardinals patience with Jordan Walker is paying off

For several years, Jordan Walker represented the future of the St. Louis Cardinals organization. His combination of size, athleticism, and elite hitting ability made him one of baseball‘s most exciting young prospects and created enormous expectations before he ever played a major league game.

For a while, though, it looked like those expectations might have arrived too quickly. Now, after years of struggles and questions surrounding his development, the Cardinals appear to be seeing exactly why they believed in him from the beginning.

He was drafted 21st overall out of high school in the 2020 MLB Draft, and he was immediately considered to be one of baseball’s elite prospects.
As he moved through Single-A, High-A, and Double-A through 2022, Walker dominated at every level, posting a combined .310/.388/.525 slash line. His combination of power and contact ability quickly elevated him into the top tier of baseball prospects.
Entering the 2023 season, Walker was widely considered one of the top five prospects in all of baseball. The Cardinals believed he was ready immediately. At just 20 years old, Walker made the St. Louis Opening Day roster and skipped Triple-A entirely. While the move generated excitement, it may also have accelerated his timeline a little too quickly.
Early Struggles Created Questions
Walker’s transition to the major leagues was anything but smooth. His offensive production fell sharply in 2024, leading to two separate demotions by the Cardinals. Things failed to improve much the following season.
In the 2024 and 2025 seasons combined, Walker struggled badly, hitting just .211 with 11 home runs. His strikeout rate went up to over 30% while his walk rate sat below 7%. At that point, many were beginning to wonder whether Walker would ever develop into the player scouts projected.

Now in his fourth season with St. Louis, Walker is finally beginning to look like the superstar talent everyone envisioned. Through 51 games and 218 plate appearances, Walker has emerged as the Cardinals’ best hitter, posting a very solid .297/.367/.585 slash line.
The improvements underneath the surface may be even more encouraging. His strikeout rate has dropped to 25.7%, while his walk rate has climbed to 9.2%.
Walker is currently tied for seventh in home runs with 15 and is showing off his speed on the bases, too. The Cardinals waited, endured the struggles, and resisted giving up on one of their most talented young players. Right now, that patience appears to be paying off in a huge way.
