Central Railway launches Environmental Awareness Campaign in the run up to World Environment Day-2026 with various activities

Ahead of World Environment Day 2026, Central Railway initiated a comprehensive environmental campaign from 15th May 2026, across all five divisions and workshops, mobilizing thousands of railway officials, staff, passengers, and citizens. Themed on sustainability, waste management, and reduction of single-use plastic, the campaign showcased Central Railway’s commitment to environmental stewardship and community participation.

*Day 1 – Environmental Pledge*
The campaign was formally launched across all five divisions with administering of pledge to Officers and Staff and other activities.
On Mumbai Division, an awareness rally promoting waste management, energy conservation, and reduced plastic usage and a plantation drive symbolizing the division’s commitment to increasing green cover was organised.
On Nagpur Division, “Say No to Single Use Plastic” door-to-door campaign and a climate change awareness program was organised at Ajni.
On Bhusaval Division, Environmental Pledge was administered at Manmad and Bhusaval, emphasizing green lifestyle and cleanliness. Pledge at Manmad was administered in the august presence of Shri Bhaskar Murlidhar Bhagare, Hon’ble MP, Dindori Lok Sabha.
On Pune & Solapur Divisions, administering of environmental pledges were carried out along with tree plantation activities.at division offices and stations. Tree plantation was organized at Solapur Coaching Complex.
At Central Engineering Workshop, Manmad, the campaign featured pledge for environmental conservation and plastic reduction and activities highlighting systematic plantation and smart plantation monitoring.
*Day 2 – Passenger & Staff Engagement*
Activites were carried out across all divisions, including
‘Carry Your Own Water Bottle’ campaign on Bhusaval division,
Environmental Walkathon on Solapur division,
A rally of 450–500 participants displaying banners/posters on environmental protection, climate change, water conservation, and energy saving and a “Say No to Single Use Plastic” campaign, promoting reusable bottles, cloth/jute bags, and source segregation of waste on Matunga Workshop.

*Day 3 & 4 – Outreach at Stations & Colonies*
Mumbai Division: Stickers and banners promoting reusable bottles, bags, and containers were distributed at CSMT and other stations/colonies, effectively engaging passengers during travel.
Nagpur Division: Health Inspectors organized social awareness among passengers and food stall vendors on climate change, plastic reduction, and eco-friendly carry bags at Wardha Railway Colony.
Bhusaval Division: Staff and trainees were guided on environmental protection and green lifestyle at Zonal Railway Training Institute Bhusaval
Pune Division: Workshops and awareness programmes for staff and passengers were conducted across the division, emphasizing eco-friendly habits and reusable water bottles.
Matunga Workshop: Awareness programs in Shakoo Coupler Shop, Paint Shop, Canteen & CB Shop reached 350–400 participants, covering plastic hazards, water/energy conservation, and waste segregation.
Parel & Badnera Workshops: Shop floor cleaning campaigns and energy conservation/waste management awareness sessions were held.
*Day 5 – “Clean Platforms, Green Future”*
Twin dustbins for dry/wet waste were installed at LTT, Chinchpokli, Kurla, Nahur, Nashik, and other stations. Awareness sessions were held at LTT Coaching Depot. Cleanliness drives were conducted across stations, colonies, and depots in Bhusaval, Nagpur, Pune & Solapur divisions. Solapur Division also ensured colour-coded dustbins, litter prevention, and housekeeping monitoring at Solapur, Wadi, Kalaburagi, Pandharpur & Kurduwadi stations.
Workshops: Matunga Workshop ran waste segregation campaigns with 80–100 participants and cleanliness drives involving 100–150 staff at Stores, HCR Shop, CB Shop. Eco-friendly alternatives like jute bags and reusable bottles were promoted. Parel, Sanpada, Central Engineering Workshop, Manmad & Badnera workshops conducted extensive cleaning, scrap segregation, and poster displays on cleanliness.
*Day 6 – Community Participation*
Mumbai Division: Under “Clean Stations, Green Communities”, joint cleanliness drives with NGOs and citizens were organized, cleaning station premises, roads, and drains with systematic waste disposal.
Nagpur & Pune Divisions: Public awareness and promotion of non-plastic, biodegradable cutlery and “Carry your own bottle” campaigns were held.
Matunga Workshop carried out scrap segregation from zero-value to high-value scrap.
Badnera Workshop ran awareness on eco-friendly waste disposal.
*Day 7 – Eco-Friendly Catering & Recycling*
Mumbai Division: IRCTC launched a special drive promoting biodegradable, non-plastic cutlery. Scrap segregation drive was held at NCC Wadibunder Depot.
Nagpur Division: Bamboo stall at PF No. 8, Nagpur station promoted eco-friendly cutlery. Wet/dry waste segregation using green/blue garbage bags was implemented at Coaching Complex/Solapur.
Matunga Workshop: Awareness on vermi-compost plant was conducted. Dry leaves, biodegradable waste, and fruit/vegetable peels are composted in large bins, producing high-quality manure for workshop gardens.
*Day 8 – Waste Wise Workforce*
Mumbai Division: “Waste Wise Workforce” drive sensitized staff and railway colonies on waste segregation, organic waste management, and plastic reduction.
Bhusaval & Pune Divisions: Interactions with passengers on plastic reduction and cleanliness were held at Chalisgaon, Jalgaon, Amravati, Kopargaon, Karad & Khadki stations.
Solapur Division: Cleaning awareness rallies were organized at Solapur, Wadi, Kalaburagi, & Kurduwadi stations and colonies.
Matunga Workshop: 400+ employees were sensitized on plastic waste segregation and recycling. Pre-monsoon drain cleaning was undertaken to prevent choking.
Central Engineering Workshop Manmad & Badnera Workshop: Extensive cleanliness and material segregation drives were carried out across Structural Yard, General Yard, and Units I–V, along with awareness and pledges at Air Brake, Paint Shop & M&P Shop.
Central Railway is committed to integrating sustainability into operations and encouraging eco-friendly behavior.
