The New York Yankees are routinely linked to all of the top players who become available for trade, as they're unafraid to spend big, whether it be monetarily or with a trade package.

While there are plenty of interesting names that could be on the move this season by the trade deadline, the headliner by a wide margin is Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal. The back-to-back Cy Young winner might be on the move this season.

It wouldn't be a surprise for the Yankees to be linked to Skubal. However, Jim Bowden of The Athletic believes there's one fairly realistic scenario that would make the Yankees an unlikely landing spot for Skubal.

Why Yankees might not trade for Tarik Skubal

"However, if Max Fried's elbow injury really is just a contusion and he comes back healthy, then a rotation of Fried, the emerging Cam Schlittler, the return of both Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon, and the further development of Will Warren and Ryan Weathers, there really isn't a need to trade their top prospects to land Skubal."

As much fun as Skubal would be with this Yankees rotation, they already have a strong group that doesn't need to be upgraded further.

It's not simply about adding Skubal, either; the cost is going to be very high, and it's a price tag that the Yankees shouldn't pay.

They have a good enough rotation as it is, with Fried, Cole, Schlittler, Rodon, Warren, and Weathers. Adding Skubal would be fun, but a little overboard.

With how expensive it would be to acquire Skubal from the Tigers, the Yankees are not a likely landing spot for the 2.70 ERA ace this season.

Now, if Fried's injury is more severe, or one of their pitchers were to get hurt, then Skubal would be a serious option for the Yankees.

But, as things currently stand, the Yankees are not a likely landing spot for Skubal due to their already strong rotation and the price tag being too expensive for the franchise.
