If anybody had guessed that the St. Louis Cardinals were going to be 31-27 to start the year, most would have said they wouldn't believe it. The Cardinals weren't expected to do much this season, but, as they typically do, they've found ways to win games.
I understand that Cardinals fans haven't been too happy with the direction of the organization before this season, but I think all longtime baseball fans understand that this is a team that has found ways to win, perhaps one of the most successful organizations in baseball over the past few decades.
Heading into this trade deadline, it'll be interesting to see which direction they want to go. Some believe the Cardinals will be buyers, while others don't expect that to be the case.
Regardless of what happens, I think there's reason to believe the Cardinals should be buyers. One writer believes so as well, recently naming them a fit for San Francisco Giants left-hander Robbie Ray.
“San Francisco probably needs to pay down some of Robbie Ray's $25 million expiring contract, but the southpaw was an All-Star last season and a Cy Young winner in 2021. He receives the benefit of the doubt, despite an unreliable performance to date in 2026. The Giants' horrible vibes don't help anyone.
“The Cardinals would offer Ray a change of scenery and a chance to join one of the most exciting young teams in baseball. There's a whole new energy to this St. Louis squad — a youthful exuberance. Ray would bring veteran mentorship and postseason experience to a fledgling staff, hopefully stabilizing a Cardinals rotation that is still quite weak compared to other NL contenders,” Christopher Kline wrote.
The one part here that the Giants and Cardinals would have to figure out is how much San Francisco would be willing to pay down on his contract.
If the Giants can give the Cardinals financial reasons to get this deal done, it feels like a move that would make a lot of sense, with the Cardinals only 5.5 games back in the National League Central and certainly having a chance to make the postseason.
