Who takes penalties for Germany? Havertz gives update

Arsenal forward Kai Havertz is widely expected to be Germany’s penalty taker at the upcoming World Cup.

However, speaking one week before the tournament begins, the 26-year-old says the penalty hierarchy has not yet been discussed.

“We haven’t talked about that yet,” Havertz said in an interview posted on the German Football Association’s website.

“In recent years I’ve usually been the penalty taker. But we have other good players who can take penalties well. There’s no hierarchy yet.”

Havertz took both of Germany’s penalties at Euro 2024, scoring against Scotland and Denmark.

Joshua Kimmich took the next two in UEFA Nations League and World Cup qualifiers, but Havertz wasn't on the pitch for those matches.

With both players on the field against Ghana in March, Havertz was back on penalty duty and converted in Germany’s 2-1 win.
