In possibly the highlight moment of the young WNBA season so far, Indiana Fever superstar Caitlin Clark knocked down a deep 3-point shot in the final seconds to beat the Washington Mystics 78-76 on Monday.
Judging by teammate Sophie Cunningham’s lighthearted Instagram meme on the play in question, it appears this dramatic play was not executed exactly how their coach, Stephanie White, drew it up. In fact, Cunningham seems to have gone rogue on this one.

Sophie Cunningham Confirms Dramatic Caitlin Clark Game-Winner Was Ad-Libbed
The stage was set: the Fever, trailing the Mystics by one point with 4.3 seconds left, drew up one final play. While inbounding the ball, Cunningham adjusted off the first read and launched a perfect cross-court pass to Clark, who knocked down the deep 3-pointer to win the game. It was a terrific clutch shot for Clark and the Fever. But was it drawn up that way? It appears not.
Humorously, Cunningham posted a meme on her Instagram of her and Clark receiving instructions from White, with the caption: “Didn’t follow the plan…won anyway.” There’s also a speech bubble that reads, “We may have… improvised.”
Clark commented on Cunningham’s post with a three-word reaction that said it all: “Love you, Soph.”
It seems that the original option was to get the ball to Kelsey Mitchell. Instead, Cunningham ad-libbed, adjusted to Mitchell being tightly guarded, and found Clark with a perfect pass, barely eluding defender Cotie McMahon before Clark knocked down the game-winner to show off a growing chemistry between the two players.
This lines up with what Fever teammate Lexie Hull said after the game.
“We were trying to draw a foul there. I think Caitlin’s a great basketball player. She made a read. I can’t say that’s exactly what we drew up, but it worked,” Hull said.
Clark had 19 points and 4 triples in the game, with her final 3-pointer deciding the game in the most dramatic of circumstances. It was far from easy for the Fever, having blown an early double-digit lead to the Mystics in a back-and-forth struggle. Clark’s signature moment made up for missing two key free throws late in the fourth quarter.
That game-winner proves that sometimes it’s best to simply get the ball to great players and watch them be great. Cunningham understood that, and Clark delivered.
