At least 13 persons, including 11 children, were killed after Pakistan’s military carried out air strikes in three provinces in Afghanistan, Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesperson for the Afghan Taliban, said on Wednesday, as cross-border clashes between the neighbouring countries intensified after a period of relative calm.

“Last night, the Pakistani military once again violated Afghanistan’s airspace and bombed civilian homes in the provinces of Kunar, Khost, and Paktika,” Mujahid said on social media. “As a result of these attacks, 11 children, one woman, and one elderly man were killed.”

Pakistan is yet to comment on the matter. However, Islamabad has repeatedly said strikes on Afghanistan are aimed at militants who have carried out attacks on its territory and that it does not deliberately target civilians.

The strikes were the deadliest in several weeks and came after a period of relative calm along the border.

Relations between Pakistan and Taliban-ruled Afghanistan have worsened in recent months following border skirmishes in October that killed more than 70 persons on both sides. Their land border has remained largely closed since the clashes.

Islamabad has accused the Afghan Taliban of not acting against militant groups that allegedly operate in its territory and carry out attacks in Pakistan. The Taliban has denied the claims.
