Speaking in Lion’s Den, the Real Madrid midfielder explained that England’s run to the European Championship final was accompanied by difficulties behind the scenes that prevented the squad from reaching its full potential.
“The group didn’t click as well as it could have”
Bellingham believes expectations surrounding England played a major role in shaping the atmosphere around the team throughout the tournament.
“At the Euros, we made some mistakes off the pitch. I don’t think the group clicked as well as they could have for several reasons. Expectations were a big part of it. We’d done well in Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022, and when Euro 2024 came around, we were considered one of the two or three teams that should win it. We weren’t playing particularly well, so even when we won, you didn’t get the feeling you were as happy as you should have.”
Learning to appreciate success
The midfielder also spoke about the need to embrace victories more fully while maintaining the competitiveness required to succeed at the highest level.
“There has to be that element of tenacity and desire to win. But the nature of football is that victories are quickly forgotten, and we should cling to that moment a little longer. This time, after having lived through those experiences and knowing, for example, that the player who scores the winning goal in the World Cup final isn’t always the one you’d bet your house on, we always have to be prepared. Everyone must feel loved and an important part of the team.”
A stronger environment moving forward
The 21-year-old also highlighted the positive atmosphere currently surrounding the England camp and praised the inclusiveness of the group.
“We have a great understanding. It’s very easy and seamless for anyone to integrate into the group. Where you’re from, where you play, your age… None of that matters in this group. It’s a joy to be here.”
