There are a few backup quarterbacks around the NFL that have some trade value and have popped up in trade rumors this offseason.
But none have been more intriguing than San Francisco 49ers backup Mac Jones. The former first-rounder would be the ideal QB for a team to trade for if they needed a starting quarterback in 2026 whose also a reclamation project.
The big question is what the 49ers could get for him in a trade. Bleacher Report's Moe Moton gave the 49ers a projected trade cost for Jones that, if the 49ers actually received an offer at that price, their decision of whether to trade Jones or not would be very easy.
49ers' projected trade value for Mac Jones would make for an easy decision
"San Francisco may not get a first-round pick for Jones, but a second-rounder is a reasonable demand for a player who could have a redemption story if given the chance to be a full-time starter," Moton writes. "Estimated trade value: 2027 second-round pick."
If the 49ers received an offer of a 2027 second-round pick for Mac Jones, there should be no question about whether they should accept it or not. Such an offer would be well-worth it for the 49ers.
As good as Jones looked in 2025 in a relief role after Brock Purdy's injury, there is no telling how good he will be moving forward, as his 2025 could've been a fluke.
Landing a second-round pick for Jones, especially one in the 2027 NFL Draft, would be a deal hard to pass on. John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan would be making a mistake if they turned down such an offer.

The best the 49ers could get if they lose Jones in free agency is a third-round pick, which would be at the end of the third round, and isn't even a guarantee.
If a team comes calling, asking for Jones, and offering a second-rounder in 2027, the team is likely desperate, and their draft pick would likely be in the top half of the 2027 NFL Draft.
A second-round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft should be accepted by the 49ers for Jones. While it's not very likely that such an offer will come across their table, if it does, Lynch and Shanahan should accept it without hesitation.
There might be concern about who the backup QB would be after trading Jones, but adding a second-rounder is something the 49ers shouldn't pass up, even if it creates a bit of a headache figuring out who Purdy's backup will be in 2026.
