During the final two weeks of June, I am using this space to count down the top Heisman Trophy candidates for 2026.
Let's go a school that knows all about winning the Heisman. It has seven, including four quarterbacks. John Huarte is the most recent quarterback winner from the school in 1964.
Why is he on the list?
Unbelievably, it has been 39 years since the last Notre Dame Heisman winner, receiver Tim Brown.
There have been other Irish quarterback candidates: Joe Theismann, Terry Hanratty, Tony Rice and Rick Mirer.
CJ Carr has the numbers (24 touchdown passes in 2025) and the lineage Both his grandpas — Lloyd Carr and Tom Curtis — are in the College Football Hall of Fame. And his his dad Jason played quarterback at Michigan.
Carr has three more seasons of eligibility, but could enter the draft after 2026. It is a loaded quarterback class and the prudent move might be to return to South Bend in '27.
A minor problem for Carr's candidacy is Notre Dame's soft schedule. BYU and Miami ae top notch, but the rest of the games are lacking. Running the table during the regular season would certainly help Carr's cause.
There are plenty of quarterbacks who have the potential to become this year's Fernando Mendoza, rising from outside the Heisman conversation to chase the award. Carr is already known and should stay on Heisman watch lists most of the season. As long as the Irish are winning, which seems likely.
My guess: Carr goes to New York as a finalist.
Bet you thought I was going to go "Tom Brady" because of the Lloyd Carr connection. But CJ Carr is closer in size to the former Notre Dame quarterback who is now the Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator. The only player who will be compared to Brady is if one of his kids plays at a high level.
