Andres Gimenez Does Not Something Not Seen For Five Years in Blue Jays Win

· Yahoo Sports

The Toronto Blue Jays toppled the Boston Red Sox for the second straight night, winning 3-0 at Fenway Park.

With the win, the Blue Jays improved to 36-38 on the season. They have already won this series and are going for their first sweep since the opening weekend of the campaign on Thursday.

Simeon Woods-Richardson earned the win in relief, going three innings as the bulk reliever. He walked three and struck out one. He's now 1-7 on the season with a 6.75 ERA. The Blue Jays went with an opener after Max Scherzer was scratched just hours before first pitch. Braydon Fisher threw the first 1.1 innings.

Offensively, the Blue Jays were led by Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Andres Gimenez was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, an RBI and three stolen bases.

As noted by Red Sox Stats on social media, he's the first player to steal three or more bases against the Red Sox since Whit Merrifield of the Kansas City Royals did it in 2021. He's also the first Blue Jays player to do it against Boston since 2001 when Shannon Stewart did it.

The 27-year-old Gimenez is now hitting .232 with seven homers, 32 RBIs and 10 stolen bases.

Rookie left-hander Jake Bennett took the loss for Boston, going 5.1 innings and giving up two earned runs on three hits. He walked none and struck out five.

Red Sox pitching had no walks and struck out 10, but the Blue Jays still found a way to win. Toronto pitchers walked seven and struck out six.

The Blue Jays will go for the sweep on Thursday at 1:35 p.m. ET. Right-hander Trey Yesavage will take the mound for Toronto against veteran righty Sonny Gray.

Yesavage is 3-3 with a 3.78 ERA while Gray, acquired this offseason, is 8-1 with a 3.03 ERA.

--Scherzer is now in the injured list with back spasms, and it's fair to wonder if his time in Toronto is done as a result.

Given his lack of production - and the injuries - can the Blue Jays afford to keep him in the rotation even when he's healthy?

Right now, the group is using Yesavage, Kevin Gausman, Patrick Corbin and Dylan Cease as fixtures in the rotation, with Shane Bieber set to return as well. Once Bieber comes back, the discussion will be about if Scherzer can really force out Corbin, who has pitched sufficiently.

Corbin has gone 2-3 with a 4.57 ERA in 13 starts.
