The Cleveland Cavaliers' decision to trade for James Harden obviously didn't go as planned, though it can't be ruled out that this move could work out in the long term.

The Cavaliers have to be hopeful that things will go as planned over the next year or so, and there's reason to believe that they can if they make the necessary moves to pair the right talent around Harden and Donovan Mitchell.

At the same time, I know most Cavaliers fans don't really want Harden on the roster long term, and I don't know how much I can blame them.

He was once again horrible in the postseason when it mattered most and is only getting older. However, according to the latest report, it would be relatively shocking to see him on any roster other than the Cavaliers' on opening night this year.

“You probably needn’t worry about either, as it is in both Harden’s and the Cavs’ interests to decline the option and ink a new deal, likely in the range of two years and $65 million to $70 million. That arrangement would slightly lessen the Cavs’ imposing salary obligations for the coming season while giving Harden a bit more long-term insurance (at least to the extent that’s possible entering an age-37 season). Either way, it would be stunning if he’s anywhere but Cleveland on opening night,” John Hollinger wrote.

Harden is what he is at this point.

There's no debate that he's one of the all-time greats, even though he's struggled when it matters most.

At the end of the day, this is a future Hall of Famer and one of the best players the NBA has ever seen. However, the questions about whether teams can win with him are more than fair, especially at this stage of his career.
