Trey McKenney indicates he's not planning to leave Michigan basketball

Michigan basketball lost its head coach. Now it has to make sure it keeps the rest of its roster, or much of it, in tact.

Dusty May told the Free Press on Monday, June 22 that he was leaving the Wolverines for the Dallas Mavericks, just in time for the NBA Draft on Tuesday, June 23, where three of his former players are expected to be top-15 picks.

He had assembled a roster in Ann Arbor going into the 2026-27 season that many believed is in the top five or 10 in the sport, potentially positioned to compete for another national championship. With uncertainty ahead, it's not clear who will be staying, and while the Wolverines are trying to insulate their team − the expectation is assistant Mike Boynton Jr. will soon be named interim head coach to create the continuity − at least one player is indicating he's not going anywhere.

Trey McKenney, born and raised in Flint and was later named Michigan Mr. Basketball at Orchard Lake Saint Mary's, has indicated he doesn't plan on going elsewhere when the transfer portal opens for U-M players, taking to social media Monday evening to imply as much.

"Victors always stay," McKenney posted on X. "HA1L #GoBlue."

McKenney, who appeared in all 40 games for U-M off the bench in Year 1, averaged 9.9 points and 2.8 rebounds per game, then was even better in the NCAA Tournament, putting up 12.0 points and 3.5 rebounds. He hit the dagger 3-pointer in the national championship game to help the Wolverines secure the second title in program history.

He's expected to be a breakout player in the Big Ten this season, and many believe he could average north of 15 points per game. He spoke with media on Monday during a golf outing at the U-M Club of Flint and discussed his intent to keep the band together, so to speak.

“I don't want to have too many comments on it, but I'm just really excited with the group of guys we have now, and hopefully we can retain everybody," he told the Detroit News. "We have a really great staff, excluding Dusty, so I think we'll be fine if everybody just settles down and believes in what we have in our facility.”

He was reportedly joined by GM and assistant coach Kyle Church, who stated that May made the decision over the weekend and met with athletic director Warde Manuel on Monday morning, but the news had already been leaked. He confirmed that Manuel introduced Boynton as the next coach "at least on an interim basis.

McKenney was supportive of the decision.

“I think he's the guy for the job,” McKenney said, per the same report. “He's the guy who recruited me, him and Dusty, so I really trust in him and what he's going to be able to do for the program. Other people have to come on board and believe the same way I do. So I'm just really excited to see what happens in the next few weeks.”
