The 30-year-old fullback-cum-wing, who earned one Test cap for the All Blacks in 2023 against the Wallabies, revealed that he has switched his allegiance and will be available for Samoa from August following the completion of World Rugby’s three-year stand-down period.

‘Not an easy decision’

Stevenson, currently playing in Japan for Kubota Spears, said the decision was not an easy one but was necessary for the next stage of his career.

“I felt like I still had a lot to offer New Zealand Rugby, but I was out of favour with the previous coaches, so you have to make those hard decisions,” he said.

The former Chiefs star also hinted that several other New Zealand-born players could join Samoa ahead of the November Test window as the Pacific Islanders continue to strengthen their squad.

Exciting attacking player

His move follows that of former All Black Peter Umaga-Jensen, who recently committed his international future to Samoa.

Stevenson made his sole Test appearance for New Zealand in a 23-20 victory over Australia in Dunedin and was considered one of Super Rugby’s most exciting attacking players during his time with the Chiefs.

Having spent the past season in Japan, Stevenson was not eligible for selection in new All Blacks coach Dave Rennie’s latest squad.

He recently featured for Kubota Spears in the Japan Rugby League One final, where they lost to the Kobe Steelers.

Building depth

The switch represents a significant boost for Samoa as they continue building depth and experience ahead of future international campaigns.

Tusi Pisi’s Samoa side will play Hong Kong China, Georgia and Romania in July in South America.

Stevenson is set to be available for the November fixtures against Portugal, Zimbabwe and Spain.
