After receiving multiple votes of confidence over the course of the roughest patches of the season, the Mets finally made a drastic move to, hopefully, shake the doldrums out of their club by firing manager Carlos Mendoza. Andy Green, former Padres manager and the Mets’ Senior Vice President for Player Development, will be interim manager for the rest of the 2026 season.

Mendoza was hired in November of 2023, signing a three-year contract with a club option for the fourth year. After leading the Mets to the postseason in his first season as skipper, Mendoza’s Mets struggled down the stretch in 2025, but his services were retained for 2026. This season, the club has been beleaguered by injuries and ineffectiveness, and have routinely been one of the worst teams in baseball.

While Mendoza’s performance was likely not the main reason for the club’s 34-47 record, the team looked often sluggish and unprepared this season and, in the midst of yet another losing streak, something had to be done. The move likely happened too late into the season for any significant change in the Mets’ fortunes, but if the team is playing better, more enjoyable baseball, this is a win.

Green will manage his first game for the Mets tonight at home against the Phillies.
