The South African Police Service (SAPS) said Border Police intercepted the suspect on Friday after receiving operational intelligence.

She was taken for a medical examination, where X-rays allegedly revealed multiple suspected drug-filled capsules concealed inside her body.

Heading for Japan

According to police, preliminary investigations indicate that the woman had travelled on a domestic route before attempting to continue her journey on an international flight.

She was intercepted after returning to OR Tambo International Airport, just before boarding a direct flight to Tokyo.

SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Vincent Mukhathi said the suspect had released 28 suspected drug-filled capsules by the time of her arrest.

“The process is ongoing under strict medical supervision, and the recovered exhibits have been booked into the SAPS exhibit management system for forensic analysis,” Mukhathi said.

In custody

He added that forensic testing will determine both the type of narcotics involved and their estimated street value.

The suspect remains in police custody and is scheduled to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 29 June 2026, on charges of dealing in drugs.

The arrest forms part of ongoing efforts by SAPS Border Police and law enforcement agencies to combat international drug trafficking through South Africa’s busiest airport, with OR Tambo remaining a key focus in disrupting transnational organised crime syndicates.
