India name women's squad to defend Asian Games cricket crown

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has revealed the women's squad set to defend its Asian Games title later this year in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.

Harmanpreet Kaur will continue leading the side for a second straight edition of the continental event, with Smriti Mandhana once again serving as her deputy.

The 15-member group features several familiar names who bring considerable international experience, including Jemimah Rodrigues, Shafali Verma, Deepti Sharma, Richa Ghosh and Renuka Singh.

All-rounder Shreyanka Patil has also been included, though her place remains conditional on her clearing a fitness assessment before the tournament gets underway.

India enters this edition as the reigning gold medallists, having claimed the title on cricket's return to the Asian Games at Hangzhou in 2023.

That triumph saw Harmanpreet's side overcome Bangladesh in the semi-final before getting past Sri Lanka in the final to complete their debut campaign with gold. Notably, cricket had been absent from the Asian Games programme for nine years before that, last appearing at the Incheon edition back in 2014.

This year's Asian Games will be held in Japan from September 19 through October 4, with the cricket competition scheduled between September 17 and 22.

Eight teams will compete in a straight knockout format, kicking off directly from the quarter-final stage rather than featuring a traditional group phase.
